What Are Raid Battles in Pokémon GO?
Raid Battles are unique battles that occur at Pokémon Gyms. Trainers can engage in a battle with a powerful Pokémon called a Raid Boss during a raid.
There are various levels of raids. Lower level raids will have weaker Pokémon and 5-Star raids will have Legendary Pokémon. Mega Raids will contain Mega Pokémon and are typically at Tier 4 difficulty.
Trainers can battle with a team of up to six Pokémon. Raid Bosses will have more HP than regular Pokes and higher level raids will require more players.
By defeating a Raid Boss, trainers will earn Rare Candies, Golden Razz Berries, TMs and Premier Balls. Premier Balls are then used to try to catch the Raid Boss.
What Are Shadow Raids?
Shadow Raids are raids run by Team GO Rocket at Gyms that are already captured.
Shadow Pokémon boss appear in these raids. In battle, the Boss may become angry (raising attack and defense).
Weakened Shadow Raid Bosses can be used by trainers in their training. Shadow Shards can be obtained from defeating Shadow Raids or Team GO Rocket members and are used to make Purified Gems.
Shadow Raids can be played on 1-Star, 3-Star and 5-Star difficulties. Legendary Shadow Pokémon will only be attainable at the 5-Star level.
Shadow Raids may not be done with Remote Raid Passes.
Raid Passes Explained
Trainers will require a Raid Pass to join a raid.
Gym Photo Discs can be spun to get Free Raid Passes. Trainers may only carry on one free Raid Pass at a time.
Premium Raid Passes and Remote Raid Passes can be purchased from the in-game shop. Players can use Remote Raid Passes to join in on raids that they are eligible for and play in, but cannot play the Shadow Raids.
How Long Will Raids Last?
Each raid will be displayed with a timer indicating the duration of the raid. Most raids can be played for approximately 1 hour, allowing players to collect and fight Raid Bosses.
Weather Booster in Raids.
The weather element has the potential to help out some Pokémon types in the Pokémon GO raids.
A Raid Boss will be a more powerful enemy to engage in combat, but if it gets caught, it will also be at a higher level than it is without a weather boost. Weather boosts can be used by trainers to form better teams and have a better chance of beating Raid Bosses.
Final Notes
The daily Pokémon GO raid rotation features Legendary Birds, Mega Lucario, and some event-only bosses from GO Fest 2026 and Road of Legends.
Raids are also subject to frequent boss changes, so trainers need to consult the most up-to-date schedule when planning raids, particularly for limited-time events.
