Pixar’s Toy Story 5 has arrived in a big way.
Toy Story 5 earns a record $160 million, its biggest box office debut of 2026. The latest installment in the franchise opened with an estimated $160 million during its first weekend, which marked the biggest domestic opening for 2026 to date and one of the strongest animated movie openings ever.
The stellar performance also helped the weekend box office cross the $200 million mark, the first non-holiday weekend of the year to do so.
Biggest Opening in Toy Story Franchise History
Over 35 years since the debut of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the gang of toys, the series is continuing to set records.
In November 1995, the original Toy Story was one of the biggest animated films released at the time, grossing $29.1 million.
In 1999, in Toy Story 2, it had an opening of $57.3 million, while in 2010, Toy Story 3 opened at $110.3 million.
In 2019, Toy Story 4 debuted with $120.9 million.
Now, the Toy Story 5 movie is taking things one step further, topping $160 million in box office takings and becoming a new record for the franchise.
This is one of the Largest Animated Openings Ever. The movie’s $160 million opening is the second highest for an animated film in opening weekend history. Only the 2018 Incredibles 2 launch exceeded the $183.6 million mark.
Inside Out 2, which opened last weekend just behind Toy Story 5 with a $154.2 million weekend, is currently in second place.
The new Pixar sequel also made it into the top 25 all-time opening weekends, by all genres.

Let’s talk about the reviews
Both critics and audiences have given Toy Story 5 positive feedback.
The film is currently rated a Certified Fresh 94% on the critics’ scoreboard and an audience score of Verified Hot 95% on the Popcornmeter.
It also earned a CinemaScore of A, a tradition followed by the franchise in the past for good audience reception.
Past movies have also garnered impressive ratings: Toy Story and Toy Story 2 both have 100% critic ratings. Toy Story 3 is at 98%, with Toy Story 4 at 97%.
Despite its huge start, Toy Story 5 faces a challenging road ahead. The movie is projected to gross more than $300 million in the U.S. by the end of next weekend, but some big competition is coming.
Illumination’s Minions & Monsters is just under two weeks behind, and Disney’s live-action Moana is coming right after.
Both films will play to audiences of the entire family at the heart of the summer movie season.
When compared to Incredibles 2, it had not been released with a lot of family-friendly competition for a while after its launch.
Billion-Dollar Club Within Reach
With the robust opening, it is already over $312 million and counting worldwide. Now with its early success, the film looks set to join the billion dollar club.
The success also goes down to the history of the franchise in movies, which has a remarkable record. The Toy Story franchise has now grossed over $3 billion in worldwide sales, excluding Lightyear.
The latest figures suggest that Woody and his pals Buzz and the rest continue to be some of the most popular animation characters of all time for Pixar.
Toy Story 5 is expected to be one of the biggest box office films of 2026, after having one of the largest window openings in animated film history and a positive opening in the United States.
