Broadway’s Biggest Night: 2024 Tony Awards Recap and Winners
Alright, the 77th Annual Tony Awards just went down last night at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, and let me tell you – it was quite the evening on Broadway!
Our host with the most, Ariana DeBose, was back for her third year running to emcee the whole shebang honoring the best plays, musicals, and performances from this season on the Great White Way.
Coming into the ceremony, everybody had their eyes on the new musicals “Hell’s Kitchen” and the play “Stereophonic” since they were leading the pack with a whopping 13 nominations each. That “Outsiders” musical adaptation was right up there too with 12 nods.
So who ended up taking home those coveted Tonys? Well, the revival of the family drama “Appropriate” scored Best Revival of a Play. Over in the Best Musical category, Shaina Taub’s “Suffs” about the women’s suffrage movement was the one that nabbed it. Taub also won for Best Book and Best Original Score, so she cleaned up nicely.
That critically-acclaimed “Merrily We Roll Along” revival snagged Best Revival of a Musical, and fan favorite Daniel Radcliffe won Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance. His co-star Lindsay Mendez must’ve had a touch of the Potters since she missed out on Featured Actress though.
The play “Stereophonic” low-key slayed, with David Adjmi winning Best Direction of a Play along with it scoring Best Scenic Design of a Play and Best Sound Design of a Play. Will Brill from the cast also got Best Featured Actor in a Play.
For them leading performers, Jeremy Strong took home Best Actor in a Play for “An Enemy of the People” while Maleah Joi Moon was named Best Actress in a Musical for “Hell’s Kitchen” – get it, girl!
Some other key wins: The sexy “Cabaret” revival got Best Scenic Design of a Musical, “The Great Gatsby” scored Best Costume Design of a Musical, and the choreography in “Illinoise” by Justin Peck was deemed the best.
Of course, they had musical performances from most of the big nominated shows like “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Outsiders,” “Suffs,” “Illinoise,” “Water for Elephants,” “Tommy,” the two revivals of “Cabaret” and “Merrily We Roll Along,” and even “Stereophonic” got to represent too.
So that’s a wrap on the 2024 Tonys! Definitely some surprising wins, snubs, and memorable moments as always when you get that much talent together. Broadway, baby!
