Fishing was once a crucial means of subsistence and survival; for some, it still is. But nowadays, it is also a hobby that people across the globe find therapeutic and fun. It’s a way to get in touch with nature, exercise, and connect with your inner self. Angling can even be a means to feed your family or spend time with friends.

However you approach this iconic pastime, there may come a day when you want to put your long-practiced skills to the test. Did you know that there are dozens of fishing tournaments and competitions for amateurs and pros? All you need to do is find the right fit, gear up, and go! Here are the basics.

What is a Fishing Tournament?

Fishing tournaments, like any sports competition, allow individuals or teams to show off their skills and win prizes for coming out on top. No two fishing competitions are quite the same. Even if you’re an amateur, there’s a tournament for you that encourages fun and learning over winning. Plus, companies like Total Fishing Tackle can help you find the best gear for your needs if you’re new to competitive fishing. There’s no reason not to give a tournament a try!

Events can range from a single day to month-long (or even year-long) competitions. Generally, scores are tallied based on the amount of fish caught and the caliber and size of those catches. Since many competitions practice catch-and-release, anglers should be ready to take pictures of all their catches. At the end of the tournament, the judges review your collection and select a winner!

Find the Right Competition

All fishing tournaments have their unique requirements. The rules and regulations from state to state may differ, with some states requiring strict permitsand enforcing guidelines to protect the safety of the aquatic habitats and fish populations. Because of this, factors like location can make a big difference in the type of competition you’ll find.

Additionally, the type of water in your region makes a big difference! Ocean fishing is much different than river fishing, and each will require a different set of skills and different gear. There are even ice fishing tournaments!

Finally, it would be best to consider your skill level and the time you want to invest when finding the correct competition.

Prepare to Compete

Once you’ve found the perfect competition, it’s time to prepare. Review the rules of the competition to ensure you’re able and ready to compete in the tournament.

Some major events require a fishing license and a boating license with liability insurance, while others don’t have many barriers to participation. Review the required specifications for equipment and ensure your gear is up to snuff. If all is good to go, pay the registration fee and mark your calendar!

Cast Your Line

Tournament fishing can be an exhilarating, memorable activity, no matter your level of skill. What are you waiting for? Grab a friend, find your perfect competition, and cast your line!
