Welcome to our ‘Spelunky 2: How To Beat Quillback!’ guide. In this guide we will give you a brief overview on who is Quillback and how to defeat him. Though the first Spelunky had some boss fights, Spelunky 2 considerably built on the same concept.
There are not only several gigantic bosses, but also specific adversaries powerful enough to act as elites. Quillback is just one of those nobles, and he guards the entrances to planet two.
Quillback, the Cavemen’s commander, stands tall and broad, with his signature porcupine fur strewn across his back. He will always appear in the Dwelling’s final location, regardless of what you do. He explores his personal domain, which is located in the centre of the level. There are multiple ladders heading down into the chamber, and walls encircle it on all sides.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a foolproof technique to avoid him. You can take advantage of Quillback’s irresponsibility to get away, but defeating him will be worthwhile. He’ll release a Bomb Bag as well as a Cooked Turkey when he dies.
How can you defeat Quillback?
Quillback, although being a humanoid, resembles a block in size. He has 10 HP, so you can strategize your attack accordingly.
First, be cautious of Quillback’s awareness. There’s no way to get close on him, he’ll notice you even as you walk away.

Quillback can leap and roll. He will lunge towards you in a large but restricted arc, causing two points of harm on contact. If you’re further away, he’ll roll towards you at a faster speed.
You can evade both of his assaults by rapidly climbing up a ladder, but his roll can immediately kill you.
Quillback is impervious to whipping and stomping without the Powerpack & Spike Shoes. You should avoid close fighting due to his response time.
Given that he is sensitive to launched items like Arrows & Rocks, inspect the top reaches for any throwables.
Ranged weapons like a shotgun or crossbow are ideal for taking him out fast and safely.
With enough distance and timing, you can also kill Quillback with a well-placed Bomb. Collect Paste so your Bob sticks to him and guarantees a kill.
