Noose spotted at Obama Center; development halted as ‘act of hate’
A noose was discovered during construction at the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, prompting officials to halt the project.
Construction has ceased because “an act of hate was uncovered at the project site,” as stated by the organisation in charge of it, Lakeside Alliance.
A Chicago Police Department officer was seen leaving the construction site on Thursday afternoon carrying what appeared to be the rope in a plastic bag, prompting an investigation.
The city of Chicago has no use for racism or emblems of bigotry, Mayor Lori Lightfoot has stated. Recent re-election candidate Governor J.B. Pritzker condemned the act and promised that Illinois “will make all needed resources available to help catch the perpetrators.”
Statement from the Obama Foundation
The Obama Foundation called the incident “shameless,” calling it a “act of cowardice and hate… designed to get attention and divide us”
In addition to a museum, a forum, and a library, the Obama Presidential Center will also feature an activity centre, park, forum, and museum when it opens in three years.
Lakeside Alliance, an organisation comprised of four minority-owned businesses, is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to those responsible for a “shameful act.”
