After declaring for the 2025 NBA Draft and stating he would stay in, Alabama star guard Labaron Philon has reversed his decision just before the deadline—he’s now set to return for his sophomore year.
The announcement came late Wednesday night from the Crimson Tide’s NIL group, Yea-Alabama.
Philon initially entered the draft following his freshman season. Just two weeks ago, he said he would remain in the draft and give up his college eligibility. But in the final hours before the deadline, he withdrew from the draft and chose to return to Alabama.
In a message shared by Yea-Alabama, Philon said:
“I am thankful for all the support from my family, friends, and Alabama throughout this process. I learned a lot throughout the NBA Draft process and received a lot of great feedback. After careful consideration, I am happy to announce that I will be returning to Alabama for my sophomore season! Roll Tide!”
Philon’s return immediately boosts Alabama back to the top tier of the SEC. The team had a big gap at guard with Mark Sears finishing his eligibility and Philon declaring. His comeback fills that space and completes the core of the 2025–26 roster.
There’s still one open roster spot, but that seems minor now. Philon was the most important player Alabama could retain. His return is a major win for the team’s chances of competing again.
As a freshman, Philon made the All-SEC team and averaged over 10 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists per game. With Sears gone, he’ll now run the offense and have a chance to be the main player on a strong team.
Philon had been projected as a late first-round or early second-round draft pick.
Alabama Coaches, Fans Celebrate Philon’s Return
Assistant coach Preston Murphy reacted strongly to the news. His excitement, along with head coach Nate Oats’, shows how key this move is.
That’s Murphy and Oats “playing chess” outside Coleman Coliseum while critics were “playing checkers.” Fans who were concerned about the offseason likely feel a lot better now.
With Philon back, Alabama’s roster looks strong again. He’ll be surrounded by tall, versatile wings and bigs. One of last season’s issues—being small at guard—shouldn’t be a concern this time.
