Learn how to take both short rests and long rests in Baldur’s Gate III so your party is always ready to go. It’s important to know how because both methods are useful for healing and restoring your spell resources. Read IGN’s guide below for in-detail tips and tricks to do so.

How to Rest in Baldur’s Gate III

Short Rest

If you’re not sure how to take a short rest, don’t worry, it’s nothing too complicated. Take a look at your minimap near the top-right corner of the screen. Click the fourth icon from the top of the screen going down. It looks like a closed eye where you can mostly see only the eyelashes. Once you click this, your party will have a short rest regaining health and certain action cooldowns.

It’s important to remember that you can only do one short rest without taking a long rest afterward. If you’re not sure how to take a long rest, read the below section explaining how. Otherwise, a short rest is mostly good for regaining around half your health and special actions that require a short rest. These are often secondary weapon action.

Long Rest

Taking a long rest in Baldur’s Gate III requires heading back to your campsite, but there’s a specific way you need to do it. If you simply fast travel back to the camp, you won’t be able to interact with the bedrolls and campfire to do so. This will only make you return to where you fast traveled from.

Instead, similar to the short rest above, look at the buttons near the minimap at the top-right corner of your screen. Click the third icon from the top of the screen going down. This will say “Go to Camp and end the day” when you hover over it. After clicking it, unlike a short rest, it will have a confirm window to do so. Once you press yes, your party will end up back at the campsite. Now click the campfire or bedroll at the center of the camp to have a long rest. Your party will sleep upon confirming the long rest.

If any of your companions wish to talk to you or have an exclamation above their head, the campfire confirm window will check with you first. This is because a lot of character building and relationships take place after ending a day with your companions. Also, when you take a long rest, there’s a chance you may trigger certain events and dream sequences too.
