House passes gun safety bill, sends it to President Biden
The Senate did pass a gun safety bill that was up for a vote in the House today, so it is not all terrible news for the United States of America. Legislation that has cleared the Senate and House and now goes to Vice President Joe Biden for his signature is officially law after the vetting process was completed.
Last Thursday, New Yorkers voted to enact a law that makes it easier to carry a gun in public, which is counter to this measure. But this is a federal reform package, and it is the largest that Congress has approved in almost 30 years. The vote to approve the sale of these firearms was at last 234 to 193. Fourteen Republican senators voted in favour of this measure to reduce gun violence.
This legislation will increase funding for school security and mental health programmes across the country and mandate universal background checks for all minors who purchase a firearm.
