Britain’s Got Talent has released the voting figures from last night’s final, and it might just surprise you.
Pianist Jon Courtenay was crowned the 2020 figure on Saturday – although the result left many unhappy with viewers rooting for choir Sign Along With Us.
Among the 10 finalists Welsh father and son magic act James and Dylan Piper moved the judges with their touching performance looking back at the importance of family during lockdown.
But none of the five magic acts made the top four, with comedian and entertainer Steve Royle, Sign Along With Us, and comedian Nabil Abdulrashid progressing to the last stage of the competition.
Now voting figures have showed that the final was not quite as close as you might have thought, the Mirror reports.
The numbers reveal Ant and Dec’s golden buzzer act Jon won by a landslide, with 35.7% of the public vote.
He was the first golden buzzer act to win the show, pocketing £250,000 and a place on the Royal Variety Show.
By comparison, Sign Along With Us came in second with 15.33%, while Steve Royle took 14.1%. Nabil Abdulrashid had just 13.9% after his controversial routine which poked fun at racists and the complaints aimed at the show following Diversity’s Black Lives Matter performance.
The viewing figures have also been released, showing the final averaged at 5.8 million viewers. This is a small rise in comparison to last year’s Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions final in late 2019. But it’s a huge drop compared to the main run of the series which ran April-June that year, with the final drawing in 9.73million viewers.
The winner has sparked some controversy already as some angry viewers think Sign Along With Us, a choir who used sign language, were robbed.
One viewer said on Twitter: “Sign Along with Us should of won Britain’s Got Talent because they are amazing people that do sign language for people that can’t speak and only can use sign language to talk which is brilliant so therefore I think Sign Along with Us should of won.”
Another said: “I’m sorry but Jon Courtenay winning over Sign Along With Us is a tragedy. That money would have gone to all those BEAUTIFUL children & done SO much more than Jon who’s destined for holiday camps. I’m actually really upset about this… Terrible”
Other felt Nabil was robbed, and he issued a statement to his supporters: “Thanks for all the support guys. Didn’t get the “W” today but don’t worry.. the marathon continues.
“Love you all #teamnabil#nabilarmy I came to make a point and I think I did,” he added.
