Rocky Mountain Elk are one of the more nomadic species in Red Dead Redemption 2, appearing to be constantly wandering between areas. Due to the several mythical varieties that can be found, elk are a favourite target for poachers. So, whether you’re looking to get some trophy pelts or complete a legendary bounty as part of your Red Dead Online Daily Challenges, we’ve assembled everything you’ll need to know in the guide below.
Best Elk Locations in Red Dead Online
The male Bull Elk has a conspicuous set of horns that distinguishes him from the female Cow Elk. Rocky Mountain Elk are classed as Bull or Cow Elk based on their sex. They cover a large area, making it difficult to pinpoint individual spawn places. However, they are restricted to the areas of West Elizabeth, New Hanover, and, most notably, Ambardino.
Ambardino
Elk and Bighorn Ram share comparable stomping grounds in Ambardino, near Cumberland Falls.
- The first location to look along the Elks’ trail is west of Valentine, near Cattail Pond.
- Elk are predominantly found in Ambardino’s Cumberland Forest and along the Dakota River north of the forest.
- They can be seen strewn about further north, near the Tempest Rim, the Wapiti Indian Reservation, and on the opposite side of Donner Falls.
West Elizabeth
The western stretch of West Elizabeth will be home to elk. Here are some of the most typical grazing areas and irrigation places they frequent.
Tall Trees!
- The Aurora Basin is a place where you can see the Aurora Borealis
- Lake Owanjila
- Along West Elizabeth’s northernmost border are the banks of the Little Creek River.
- Wallace Station and Cumberland Falls are two places worth visiting.
New Hanover
In RDO, Roanoke Ridge in New Hanover’s northern reaches is a great place to look for elk. They like to roam the valleys and live in the caves that surround them. Elk can also be found along the banks of the Dakota River on the other side of New Hanover, particularly when the river bends near Caliban’s Seat.
Legendary Inhame Elk
With a snow-white coat and dark crimson antlers, the Legendary Inahme Elk may be the most distinctive of the Elk breeds. However, you’ll never see it hanging around with the rest of the Elk herd.
Legendary Ozula Elk
The legendary Ozula Elk is the only elk breed that can survive New Austin’s arid climate. This uncommon beast has been sighted roaming the full length of Cholla Springs, with its brilliant red coat contrasted by its black antlers. On the map above, we’ve highlighted this special Elk spot in white. This rare breed of Elk still tries to evade the oppressive heat of its southern environment, appearing only between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. when the weather is misty.
Legendary Katata Elk
The antlers and coat of the Legendary Katata Elk are notably black. This unusual form can be found in Cumberland Forest with its more common relatives. You may expect to see one between the hours of 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. This dark legendary beast, on the other hand, enjoys the calm of the night and misty weather.
