“Lilo & Stitch” is successfully causing box office mayhem. The children’s science fiction comedy is a live-action remake of Disney’s 2002 “Lilo & Stitch,” which was fully animated.

Blockbuster $145.5 Million Opening Weekend

Families turned out in force for Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch” remake, which collected a blockbuster $145.5 million in its opening weekend and an estimated $183 million through Monday. This one was originally set to debut on Disney+ before the studio reversed course.

Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” scored the biggest Memorial Day weekend opening of all time, hauling in $145.5 million to lap Tom Cruise’s eighth and final “Mission: Impossible” film, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

Millennials and Gen Z’s represented the largest audience base for the weekend, indicating appeal well beyond kiddies and parents. That’s a pretty fantastic result for Disney, who has had mixed success this year with both Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts falling short of the blockbuster numbers usually grossed by Marvel movies.

This weekend delivered the best collective Memorial Day weekend haul with $322 million across all films. It’s been more than a decade since this many people went to the movies over the holiday frame. The prior record was established in 2013 with $314 million across all films.

$341 Million Global Opening Weekend

Disney’s latest live-action remake ignited to $341 million globally, including a mighty $157.8 million from international markets. Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Lilo & Stitch” debuted at the top of the China box office over the May 23–25 weekend, pulling in RMB62.3 million ($8.7 million), according to Artisan Gateway.

The family title marked the strongest performance among a quiet slate, offering a rare Hollywood success in a year dominated by local productions. It’s the second-largest opening weekend of the year behind the Warner Bros. video game adaptation “A Minecraft Movie” ($313 million over three days).
