You begin The Ascension by customizing your character’s hairdo, skin color, and gender. This is not, however, a permanent option; you can modify the character’s appearance at any moment.

How to change character’s appearance?
Find the blue DNA icon on the map and head there once you’ve arrived in the city (i.e. after you’ve completed the prologue). The icon can be seen near the pistol and hammer icons.
You’ll arrive at the location depicted in the image above, which is a building with the word “Crafting” written on it. Enter the building.
Open the Biology tab by pressing the interaction button (next to the chair). All of your character’s features, including gender, can be changed here. Furthermore, this procedure is costless.
