The first trailer for the newest Disney film Raya and the Last Dragon weaves a new fantastical world.
The Southeast Asian-inspired fairy tale follows a lone warrior named Raya (Kelly Marie Tran) who must track down the last dragon in order to save her kingdom. The dragon in question is Sisu (Awkwafina), a water dragon who can transform into a human and who needs Raya’s help to reclaim her true power.
Disney announced the film at last year’s D23 expo, revealing some first look art and insight into the land of Kumandra. The fantasy land is a reimagined Earth, where the remnants of an ancient civilization have split into five different regions.
In this trailer, we don’t see the dragon, but we do see the divided world and fearsome warrior Raya — and her designated cute animal sidekick, TukTuk.
The movie was originally supposed to premiere this November, but it was delayed when Pixar’s Soul was originally changed to that slot from its June release. Now, Raya and the Last Dragon is still tentatively set to hit theaters on March 12, 2021. Word is still out on whether it will follow in the footsteps of Mulan and Soul, both of which skipped theaters and headed straight to Disney Plus.
