Unreal Engine 5 will be used to create a new Tomb Raider video game, Crystal Dynamics said Tuesday. The planned title has no release date.
The developer garnered widespread praise for Shadow of the Tomb Raider and the following two titles in the reboot trilogy, Tomb Raider (2013) and Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015).
Crystal Dynamics recently worked on Marvel’s Avengers and the upcoming Perfect Dark revival alongside Microsoft’s The Initiative studio.
At Epic Games’ State of Unreal 2022 presentation, Tomb Raider franchise general manager Dallas Dickinson revealed the new game.
But he didn’t display any games or graphics, only promised “high-quality cinematic action-adventure.” He said Crystal Dynamics wants to “push the envelope of fidelity.”
Crystal Dynamics, which started a successful Tomb Raider reboot trilogy in 2013, is the latest developer to switch to Unreal Engine 5.
Aside from The Coalition, CD Projekt Red stated last month that its upcoming The Witcher game will be produced utilising Unreal Engine 5.
Crystal Dynamics’ upcoming Tomb Raider game will be the first new mainline game since September 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
