An approximately 2-year-old boy has died after suffering a gunshot wound in what authorities believe was an apparent accidental shooting in San Bernardino County.
The incident occurred just before 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at an apartment complex near the intersection of Pacific Street and Victoria Avenue in Highland, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Officials said the toddler was rushed to a local hospital after the shooting but was later pronounced dead.
Authorities have not confirmed exactly how the shooting happened. However, a witness told RMG News that the child allegedly found a firearm, walked outside with it, and accidentally shot himself. Investigators have not verified that account.
Video from the scene showed a large law enforcement presence as deputies and detectives canvassed the apartment complex and interviewed witnesses.
The Sheriff’s Department has not announced any arrests, and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
