Twitter will begin selling usernames in order to increase revenue

According to a report by The New York Times, the microblogging platform Twitter is considering selling usernames in order to increase money. CEO Elon Musk has been trying to discover ways to increase income after the company went into the red. According to a New York Times article, the programmers intend to hold digital auctions at which users can bid on their desired usernames and social network handles. The success of this potential revenue increase and whether or not it will affect all users or just those who want to alter their usernames remain open questions. In December, we speculated on the future of this novel approach to increasing sales.

An earlier tweet from the company’s CEO stated that inactive accounts would be deleted, freeing up at least 1.5 billion social handles. Following his purchase of Twitter, Elon’s primary objective was to allow users to pick their own handles. Twitter’s regulations against “username squatting” restrict the purchase or sale of usernames. Despite these limitations, the ability to purchase enticing Twitter handles on the dark web has long existed. Attractive usernames have been used as bait to entice hackers in the past.

In 2020, a young person was apprehended after he or she hacked into a social media site and stole popular usernames for sale. Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and even Barack Obama’s private life were exposed this year. Earlier in October of last year, Telegram revealed that it would be holding an auction for usernames, prompting Twitter to do the same. Telegram hoped to sell off both personal accounts and channels through the TON blockchain’s built-in marketplace.

Musk has been trying to make money off the platform since he acquired control of it and went into debt. Since Elon Musk took over as CEO, the company’s income has been declining as he experiments with changes to the platform that are met with widespread disapproval. Not only have users abandoned ship, but so have marketers and major companies, causing the corporation to reduce its own income predictions. The company has been making a lot of modifications to the platform over the past few months, and they have all had an impact on how it works. In order to increase profits, the corporation had previously planned to allow political advertisements.
