” The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope – Will Poulter Reflects on Doing Motion Capture for 3 Characters”

Will Poulter made his video game debut in 2020’s The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope, a game that functioned essentially as a playable horror film. Poulter told ComingSoon about his experiences with motion capture and what it was like to play a video game character.

“I’d never done any motion capture before, so that was my first experience, and it was super fun,” Poulter said of the game-making process. “I had a great time. It was a really enjoyable creative challenge. And, while I’m not a big gamer, I have a lot of friends and family members who are, so it was fun to be a part of it. It was also a genuine learning experience I’m grateful that adapting to different styles of filmmaking, forms of media, and genres is a part of this job. And it was just a really, really cool opportunity to try something new and flex some new muscles.”

Three characters in the game

Poulter plays three characters in the game: Andrew, Anthony, and Abraham, all of whom speak in different accents. Poulter said that when channelling different voices for the roles, he drew on his father (who is from Yorkshire, England) for one of them, and described how difficult it was.

“Yeah, that was cool,” Poulter said of playing three different characters. “Because my father is from Yorkshire, I think I was channelling a little bit of my father in northern England there, which was fun to do.” It was also a fantastic opportunity to play three different characters in the context of a video game. It implied that there was a legitimately fun and challenging acting task in there somewhere. And I had a great time with the people at Supermassive Games.
