Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost named their son Cosmo. But, according to the SNL star, Mom wasn’t having it.

Celebrity baby announcements appear to have become more common in the last year. Reality TV star Kylie Jenner and Aquaman alum Amber Heard are just a few celebrities who have confirmed that they have or will have a sweet bundle of joy. Scarlett Johnasson was among them, which surprised many. Johansson was blessed with a child this year, Cosmo. Many people were taken aback when the name was revealed. The mother of the Saturday Night Live star was reportedly among those who were dissatisfied with it.

After the birth of a child, most grandparents check in with their grandchildren and/or inlaws to ensure that the baby is healthy. However, in the case of Colin Jost and Scarlett Johansson, many of the check-ins were about the child’s name. Cosmo, according to Jost, was difficult for his mother to understand. This elicited some amusing exchanges between mother and son.

My family is always supportive, though my mother was taken aback and didn’t quite understand what was going on. I’m not sure if she thought it was a hippie thing, a dirty hippie thing [laughs]. … But she’d call us and say, like, three or four days later, ‘Cosmo….’ ‘A now, is it final?’ she’d ask. For example, did you submit your birth certificate?’ ‘Oh yeah, we did that at the hospital,’ I think. And she says, ‘OK, interesting, because I read there’s also a name Cosimo with an i.’ … ‘Maybe you call him Cosimo, that’s his real name, and then you can call him Cosmo,’ she suggested.

Colin Jost’s most recent appearance was on Late Night with Seth Meyers, where he described being perplexed by his mother’s suggestions. He did, however, mention that his mother knows members of the Italian community and that they all have relatives named Cosmo. The baby could even be named after Cosmos, the patron saint, according to mother Jost.

Her son, on the other hand, made it clear that the baby’s name had already been decided. You can watch Colin Jost’s entire interview with Seth Meyers, complete with “the first image of the baby,” here. The specifics are listed below.

Cosmo is an unusual name, to be sure, but you have to admit it. Only two people with that name are mine, and one of them is a friend. Jerry Seinfeld’s eccentric neighbor and a delightfully green-haired fairy godparent And for those who still think it’s an unusual name for a baby, it’s not the most unusual.

Diaz, Cameron Benji Madden named their daughter Raddix, and the baby’s nickname was simply “Rad.” Some people were probably surprised when Kim Kardashian and Kanye West announced that their youngest son’s name would be Psalm. Is it even necessary to bring up Elon Musk and Grimes’ son, X Æ A-Xii?

Baby names have a special meaning for the parents, so I’m sure Colin Jost and Scarlett Johansson were very deliberate when they named their son Cosmo. Jost’s mother appears to be at peace with the decision, but I’m sure the name will continue to come up in casual conversations among the general public. During the season premiere of Saturday Night Live, Jost could even mention his newborn baby.
