Obsession is one of the biggest success stories of the year, after making record box office, and also gaining attention from everyone in the cast and director. Not many people would have predicted that this movie would be a huge commercial success.
Focus Features beat out the competition in a bidding war at Toronto’s International Film Festival for the rights to the film. Focus reportedly acquired the rights for $15 million, topping out a number of studios that were interested, including Neon and A24. Obsession was a success in Toronto and has continued to build in theaters.
Obsession is breaking another box office record after becoming the biggest film picked up for a film festival ever. The horror romance has now topped the list of previous films with $225.5 million worldwide, beating 2004’s Fahrenheit 9/11, which made $222 million worldwide.
It recently surpassed Downton Abbey, which grossed $194.6 million globally in 2019 and previously was the studio’s biggest box office hit. The film has also been the biggest in Focus Features history as a result of the success of Obsession.
It grossed more in its second and third weekends than its opening weekend, which is uncommon and hasn’t happened since E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in 1982. The fourth weekend saw sales fall by just 7 percent, which helped it beat Focus Features’ previous weekend scores.
The movie has also propelled the careers of its cast. Director Curry Barker has already been working on the next film in his career, a comedy horror called Anything But Ghosts. The film will also star Bryce Dallas Howard and Aaron Paul, and will star Barker with Obsession actor Cooper Tomlinson.
The popularity of the film’s lead actress, Inde Navarrette, has increased significantly. Her performance has been met with awards discussion. This has been a hot topic on the internet, and older footage of Navarrette playing Call of Duty has also surfaced.
Prior to the success of Obsession, Navarrette was also at work on two other films, Invertigo and Kids of the Black Hole, which are also currently in post-production. She has additionally been publicly expressing her interest in playing Violet Sorrengail in the Amazon Prime Video television adaptation of The Fourth Wing.
