In Halo Infinite’s finale, you’ll face Harbinger, a mysterious being who has been working with the Banished for reasons unknown. And since you’re Master Chief, you’ll eventually beat her. It appears she is The Endless, a name you’ve heard a lot. However, Harbinger is actually a representative of The Endless, a long-time puppeteering race of aliens.
Harbinger warns you that your time is running out and that The Endless will be your downfall, but Chief sees no evidence of it. After the credits, we find a vault whose location is unknown. A Banished’s hand unlocks the vault, revealing a multitude of strange vaults, possibly containing The Endless. We know the Forerunners had them imprisoned long before Chief, the pilot, and the Weapon arrived on Zeta Halo.
The camera reveals an army of Endless in memory card-like prisons, and the Banished warrior who has unlocked the vault is none other than Atriox, the Banished leader who was thought dead. His apparent martyrdom enflames the Banished, especially Escharum, who assumes the role of leader in his absence. We’re not sure if what we’re seeing is Atriox’s final moments or if he’s still alive. Collectively, it’s a puzzle.
However, if you beat the game on Legendary difficulty, you get a voiceover during the same scene. Atriox is heard speaking to what appears to be an AI, who expresses reservations about the former’s next actions. Atriox justifies his actions by claiming they are the only way to stop The Endless. Both Atriox and the AI-like voice mention their work for The Criterion, a name that even the most avid Halo fans may not know yet.
For now, we’re left wondering what Atriox is doing. That Harbinger believes he is helping The Endless when in fact he is hindering their escape from their Forerunner-made prison. Whereas, who is The Criterion, and why does it feel like they’ve just ushered in a new level of interplanetary power?
Master Chief will be needed at some point. Expect more DLC or even a full-fledged sequel. After facing the Covenant, Flood, Forerunners, and Banished, it appears Master Chief is still learning about the powers that be.
