Corrections officer who fled with prisoner dies in hospital
Officials say a former Alabama jail administrator killed herself after she and a murder suspect she aided escaped were apprehended Monday in Indiana after a week on the run.
It’s unclear why Vicky White, 56, a respected jail administrator, would aid Casey White, 38, a inmate with a violent and dangerous past.
The two fugitives were apprehended near Evansville, Indiana, after US Marshals followed and collided into their car. Vicky White was brought to a hospital after she shot herself, police said. White died from her injuries, according to Coroner Steve Lockyear.
“We got a dangerous man off the street today. He is never going to see the light of day again. That is a good thing, for not just our community. That’s a good thing for our country,” “Sheriff Rick Singleton remarked.
Vicky White, the Lauderdale County jail’s assistant director of corrections, reportedly helped Casey White, who was awaiting trial for capital murder, escape on April 29. Vicky White had informed coworkers she was bringing the convict to the courts for a mental health examination, but the two did not return.
Surveillance photographs from an Evansville car wash showed a guy who resembled Casey White exiting a 2006 Ford F-150 pickup vehicle, the Marshals Service said. White is 6’9″ tall and weighs 260 lbs.
On Monday, the duo was observed near the sheriff’s office in Vanderburgh County, Indiana. When authorities arrived, the two escaped in a car, he added. “to try to end the pursuit,” he added, marshals colliding. Vicky White then shot herself, suffering “very serious” injuries, he added.
“We’re lucky that no law enforcement was injured, no innocent civilians were injured, the pursuit was short in nature and we have both people in custody,” Wedding said.
Casey White was serving a 75-year sentence for attempted murder when he escaped. He was on trial for stabbing a 58-year-old lady during a 2015 burglary. His punishment if found guilty is death.
“We got a dangerous man off the street today. He is never going to see the light of day again. That is a good thing, for not just our community. That’s a good thing for our country,” Singleton Informed
In 2015, Casey White threatened to kill his ex girlfriend and sister and indicated “that he wanted police to kill him,” the Marshals Service said.
Vicky Sue White was charged with first degree enabling or aiding escape on May 2.
Vicky White’s relatives and coworkers were astonished by her participation. Singleton said she was a model employee, but it appears the scheme had been in the works for some time. Convicts stated she treated Casey White better than other inmates.
She acquired a rifle and a shotgun recently and was known to have a handgun, according to US Marshal Marty Keely.
Singleton claimed video showed them leaving the jail and driving to the shopping area to pick up the Ford. Their flight went unnoticed for a long time.
Investigators think Casey White’s pickup vehicle was taken in Tennessee and driven 175 miles to Evansville, an official told The Associated Press. The official talked to the AP on the condition of anonymity because the inquiry was ongoing.
