Role Overview

We are seeking an energetic and knowledgeable Sports Writer to join our sports desk. In this role, you will cover major US leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB) as well as significant international sporting events. You will be responsible for providing fast-paced game recaps, deep-dive player profiles, and sharp analysis on the business of professional sports, catering to our millions of highly engaged sports fans.

This is a contract-based, 100% remote position. You will report to our Sports Editor and collaborate with a global team to ensure our coverage is timely, accurate, and highly readable. The ideal candidate lives and breathes sports, understands statistical analysis, and can write compelling narratives under tight deadlines, especially during game days.

What You'll Do

• Produce 5–7 high-quality articles per week, ranging from breaking news briefs and game recaps to in-depth analytical features.
• Monitor daily sports schedules, press conferences, and trade rumors to identify trending storylines.
• Analyze sports industry news, including coaching changes, draft predictions, and league policy updates.
• Pitch original feature ideas focusing on athletes' off-field impact, team dynamics, and the economics of sports.
• Adhere to AP Style and The West News' internal editorial guidelines to ensure a consistent, professional brand voice.
• Implement SEO best practices, including keyword optimization, to ensure our sports coverage ranks highly during live events.

What We're Looking For

• 2+ years of professional writing experience in sports journalism for a digital publication.
• A proven portfolio of published work demonstrating your ability to cover live events and write analytical sports features.
• A deep, working knowledge of major US sports leagues and their respective histories, rules, and current standings.
• Excellent command of written English, with the ability to inject personality and excitement into your copy while maintaining accuracy.
• The ability to meet strict, rapid-turnaround deadlines, particularly during major sporting events or breaking news.
• Experience working with WordPress or similar CMS platforms and an understanding of live-event SEO strategy.
