As a remote-first organization, we've built a culture of excellence that transcends borders. We work with talented writers, reporters, and strategists from around the world, offering a flexible and collaborative environment where editorial integrity is the highest priority. Joining The West News means joining a mission to inform, educate, and engage a diverse international readership through compelling digital storytelling.
Role Overview
We are seeking a prolific and insightful Politics & Policy Writer to join our politics desk. In this role, you will be responsible for translating complex legislative developments, electoral data, and policy shifts into engaging, readable content for a broad audience. Whether it's breaking down the latest congressional hearing, analyzing shifts in voter sentiment, or providing actionable policy analysis, your voice will be central to how our readers understand their government.
This is a contract-based, 100% remote position. You will report to our Senior News Editor and collaborate with a global team of editors and SEO strategists. The ideal candidate has a deep fascination with government, a firm grasp of the political process, and the ability to write with speed, precision, and neutrality in a digital-first newsroom.
What You'll Do
- Produce 5–7 high-quality articles per week, ranging from 800 to 1,200 words each, covering federal and state legislative developments.
- Monitor government legislative calendars, executive actions, and judicial rulings to identify trending stories.
- Conduct thorough research using credible sources, including primary legislative text, government reports, and expert interviews.
- Pitch original feature ideas and "evergreen" political explainers that help readers navigate complex policies.
- Cover election cycles comprehensively, including candidate tracking, poll analysis, and campaign finance developments.
- Adhere to AP Style and The West News' internal editorial guidelines to ensure a consistent, professional, and non-partisan brand voice.
- Implement SEO best practices, including keyword optimization and internal linking, to maximize the reach of every piece of content.
What We're Looking For
- 2+ years of professional writing experience in the political or policy niche, preferably for a major digital publication.
- A proven portfolio of published work demonstrating your ability to cover complex political topics for a general audience.
- A strong understanding of US government structure and the legislative process.
- Excellent command of written English, with an eye for detail and the ability to self-edit for clarity and flow.
- Proven ability to write nuanced, non-partisan analysis on controversial or deeply divided issues.
- Experience working with WordPress or similar CMS platforms and an understanding of SEO fundamentals.
- The ability to meet strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment while working independently.
What We Offer
- 100% remote work: Write from the comfort of your home, a cafe, or a co-working space anywhere in the world.
- Flexible hours: We focus on output and quality rather than "clocking in." Manage your own schedule to meet deadlines.
- Competitive USD compensation: Paid monthly via your preferred method (Bank Transfer or PayPal).
- Global Reach: Your byline will be featured on a platform reaching millions of readers across the US and beyond.
- Career Growth: Many of our contract writers have moved into senior editorial or staff roles as we continue to expand.
