Role Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and sharp-witted Local News Reporter to cover the heartbeat of New York City. In this role, you will be our eyes and ears on the ground, reporting on everything from City Hall politics and community board meetings to the cultural trends and crime stories that define the five boroughs. This is a remote, contract-based role that requires a reporter who is deeply embedded in the NYC landscape and can produce fast, accurate, and compelling news copy.

What You'll Do

• Produce 5–7 news stories per week, ranging from breaking news briefs to in-depth community features.
• Monitor local government agencies, NYPD blotters, and social media to identify breaking news in NYC.
• Attend (virtually or in-person) public meetings, press conferences, and community events to gather original quotes and insights.
• Cultivate a network of local sources, including community leaders, government officials, and activists.
• Write with a firm understanding of SEO news trends to ensure our local coverage reaches the widest possible audience.
• Collaborate with our National News Editor to identify local stories that have national significance.
• Maintain a neutral, objective, and authoritative tone in all reporting.

What We're Looking For

• 2+ years of experience in local news reporting, preferably within the New York City market.
• Deep knowledge of NYC geography, politics, and community issues.
• Proven ability to turn around high-quality news copy on tight deadlines.
• Excellent interview skills and the ability to extract meaningful information from diverse sources.
• Experience with WordPress and basic photojournalism (smartphone photography is acceptable).
• A commitment to ethical journalism and fact-checking.
