The mother of Baltimore Ravens star Calais Campbell was found dead inside her home in Atlanta on Tuesday, and his older brother has been charged with murder, authorities said.
Officers responded to a Buckhead woman’s townhouse after a family member called 911 for a welfare check to find the 71-year-old woman’s body unresponsive, WSB-TV reports.
Later, the Campbell family issued a press release expressing their grief over the loss of their mother.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Campbell Family is “devastated” to learn that Mrs. Nateal Campbell has passed away.

“While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father, her beloved Chuck, and in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her and share in our overwhelming grief privately and as a family.”
Officers were dispatched to the house on Roswell Road NW, 3500 block, shortly after 12:30 p.m. Tuesday when relatives were worried about Nateal Campbell’s condition.
Police responded to find a man barricaded in the house. Police broke into the house and arrested the man.
Later investigators determined the identity of the suspect to be Ciarre Campbell, the victim’s 41-year-old son and brother of Calais Campbell.
The S.A. has charged the Brother with murder.
Wednesday morning, Ciarre Campbell was arrested and booked into the Fulton County Jail.
According to jail records, he has been charged with:
- Murder
- Aggravated assault
- Possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a felony
Only a few details have been released so far while the investigation goes on.
Ciarre Campbell’s attorney, Jay Abt, told WSB-TV that investigators have issued a search warrant for the Buckhead residence, clothing, and DNA samples.

Police stated that the house had been previously called in on Ciarre Campbell.
“A brief look into the history does show some calls back in April dealing with this location, a possible arson incident,” Lt. Christopher Butler told WSB-TV.
“There have been some indications of possibly some mental health issues with an individual.”
Police officials didn’t say if Ciarre Campbell was staying with his mother when he was found.
Calais Campbell has had a long career in the NFL since being drafted second overall in the 2008 NFL Draft by the Browns.
The six-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman is also one of the current leaders in sacks and was named the 2025 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year.
He is the founder of the Charles Richard Campbell Foundation along with his mother and seven siblings. The foundation is named after his father, who passed away, and is dedicated to teaching young people the necessary skills to live.
Authorities have not released more details about the investigation into the death of Nateal Campbell, and it’s continuing.
