“Yellowstone Interview: ‘Kevin Costner’ Opens up about Surprising Success and share his thoughts on series”
ComingSoon chatted to Kevin Costner, who plays John Dutton in the flagship series of Paramount+ and stars in Yellowstone. The Academy Award-winning artist also discussed his experience working on a television show, his ideas on how to start the Yellowstone cultural phenomenon, and other topics.
According to the summary, “Yellowstone follows the Dutton family, headed by John Dutton, who owns the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the United States.” The ranch is in continual battle with those it borders, including a burgeoning town, an Indian reserve, and America’s first national park, amid shifting alliances, unsolved killings, open wounds, and hard-earned respect.

Kevin Costner Thoughts
No, Kevin Costner. I consider everything. When my concerns about producing a certain movie grow overwhelming, I refuse. I must thus decide that when this came along, I was able to see where they were trying to go. All I wanted to know was whether it had a potential to 1) pique my interest and 2) offer the same pleasures to a larger audience. I thus had to sort of decide on that fundamentally. Yes, I believe that people will really love this, I concluded. I didn’t think it would be a huge hit, but I’m not surprised at all that so many people seem to enjoy it that they found it enjoyable. I doubt that I could have precisely predicted that.
As you noted, Yellowstone is now a well-known cultural icon. Prequel and sequel series of every kind are now commonplace. What does it mean to have a hand in the creation that started it all imply?
Yes, that is a wonderful question, Costner. Understanding what we started, what we done, and how we continue to do it gives me a tremendous sense of pride. In America, if something is successful, you simply figure out how to make it continue to be successful. And you carry it out. You simply keep ringing it till it stops giving. Though they undoubtedly are making an intelligent effort, all of these have their roots in the original Yellowstone.
