WWE Investigating Vince McMahon Over Alleged $3 Million Hush Payment
Vince McMahon, 76, is WWE’s chairman and CEO. McMahon has played a villain on WWE TV, most famously clashing with “Stone Cold” Steve Austin during the Attitude Era, but he’s also been embroiled in real-world scandals. McMahon allegedly had an affair with a former employee and paid $3 million in “hush money.” WSJ reports this. The WWE board is reportedly probing Vince McMahon over a $3 million settlement in January. The unnamed woman and McMahon had a “consensual” connection. Anonymous emails alerted WWE’s board on March 30. According to emails, McMahon recruited the lady as a paralegal with a $100,000 salary but raised it after establishing a sexual connection with her.
Emails claimed McMahon “handed her like a toy” to WWE talent relations executive John Laurinaitis. John Laurinaitis was a Raw villain who feuded with John Cena and CM Punk. The WWE board investigated Vince McMahon and John Laurinaitis in April after obtaining the emails. The board’s inquiry purportedly found nondisclosure agreements between McMahon and Laurinaitis and other women who filed misconduct charges against them. The Wall Street Journal contacted McMahon’s lawyer, Jerry McDevitt, who maintained WWE did not pay the employee in the $3 million hush-money cases. McMahon and WWE are reportedly cooperating.
It will be fascinating to watch how WWE responds. This may push 76-year-old McMahon to stand aside from his firm leadership post, but it may not. McMahon has been at the center of several significant controversies, and the only time he was close to losing control of WWE was during the mid-1990s steroid trial.
