Why Drake and Music Critic Anthony Fantano Are At War
Drake’s most recent beef in the industry began with a vegan cookie.
Drake responded to music critic Anthony Fantano (who runs the YouTube channel The Needle Drop) on Thursday (September 15) by posting a screenshot of what he claims are the real messages he sent to Fantano via Instagram Stories, in which the superstar rapper appears to slide into his DMs and share a vegan cookie recipe (and a number of niceties).
“Your existence is a light 1. And the 1 is cause you are alive,” read the first of Drizzy’s harsh DMs, referencing Fantano’s own rating scale, followed with, “And cause you somehow wifed a Black girl. I’m feeling a light to decent 1 on your existence.”
Perhaps it was always the critic’s intention for Drake to reveal the dialogue in reaction to Fantano’s troll cookie video. Following the release of the rapper’s screenshots, Fantano went on Live to discuss the feud, saying, “Essentially what happened is that for reasons unknown to me, Drake was in his feelings, as he does tend to be.”
Despite Fantano’s attempts to downplay his part in the not-so-nice DM from Drizzy, it is simple to see why one of the best-selling rappers of all time eventually punched back after a decade and a half of the critic’s nasty assessments. Take Care, which Fantano said included “20 minutes of crap” and “a steak with way too much fat that you gotta cut around to get to the good stuff,” scored a “strong six” on the same scale, while Nothing Was the Same received a “light five.”
Despite Fantano’s long-standing animosity toward Drake, his recent six-minute assessment of Honestly, Nevermind, which he rated as “not good” out of 10, may have been the final straw.
Fantano said on Instagram Live that he has “no hard feelings against Drake.”
However, Drake’s recent reunion with Ye at their L.A. concert demonstrates that the rap icon is capable of putting the past in the past.
