What made Amy Schumer say “no” to playing Barbie?
The new Barbie teaser has gone viral, and in it, Amy Schumer explains why she passed down a role in the film. The 41-year-old comedian says she had to decline the role in this film owing to scheduling issues in 2022. The actress stated her disappointment at being unable to participate in this project, adding, “The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.”. According to a Sony representative, “We respect and support Amy’s decision. We look forward to bringing Barbie to the world and sharing updates on casting and film-makers soon.”
Amy explained in an interview that a difference in opinion was another factor in her decision not to accept the position. During an interview, Amy revealed that she had originally envisioned a career as an inventor for her Barbie doll, but that “they definitely didn’t want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it” ultimately prevailed. The production company recommended that Schumer’s Barbie character invent high heels out of Jello.
From that point on, the divergence in viewpoints became quite evident, according to Amy. They also gave Amy an expensive pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes as a present. Amy said, “Right there, I should have gone, ‘You’ve got the wrong gal,’” in reference to the assumption that this is what every woman wants.
Amy was also the target of online harassment after her casting was announced in 2016. People started making comments about her size and attractiveness. They made comments like “Mattel is completely ruining her image by letting Amy Schumer be a Barbie,” an obvious reference to Schumer’s body size.In an Instagram post, Amy shot back at the haters, asking the question, “Is it fat shaming if you know you’re not fat and have zero shame in your game? I don’t think so. … When I look in the mirror I know who I am.”
