The United States has dominated the Olympics like no other country.
The United States had 2,828 total medals throughout the winter and summer games when it arrived in Tokyo in 2021, including 1,127 gold medals. The Soviet Union came in second with 1,204 total medals and 473 gold, followed by Russia with 547 total medals and 196 gold.
The United States has excelled in the Summer Games in particular. In the history of the Summer Games, Team USA has won 1,022 gold medals and 2,523 overall medals.
It helps to have had dominant athletes like Simone Biles and Michael Phelps in recent years; both are regarded as all-time greats in their respective sports. Phelps is no longer competing, but Biles, as well as top swimmer Katie Ledecky, a powerful women’s soccer squad, and two basketball teams stacked with stars, should all contribute to the total.
