Unstoppable: ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ is now Sixth Biggest Movie Ever
An otherwise average weekend at the box office was dominated once again by Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. The Marvel Cinematic Universe picture has already surpassed Titanic ($659 million) and Jurassic World ($652 million) in domestic box office gross. The picture will certainly go up to fifth place after surpassing The Avengers’ $678 million haul.
No Way Home’s $33 million fourth weekend tally is bigger than most films’ first weekend grosses in the epidemic. The superhero spectacular shattered several pandemic-era records and, by most accounts, performed as expected. But No Way Home looks to be an exception, since other films did poorly at the box office.
Sing 2 became the first animated picture to accomplish so since Disney’s Frozen 2 in 2019. This is particularly noteworthy given that parents are wary about packed movie theatres due to a highly infectious new coronavirus outbreak. Earlier this week, the film was made digitally available.
It earned $11.9 million in three days, placing it second. Sing 2’s box office success comes as Disney just revealed that it will distribute Pixar’s next picture Turning Red straight on the Disney+ streaming channel, making it the third Pixar title to not have a theatrical release.
The 355, written and directed by Simon Kinberg, started at #3 with only $4.8 million from over 3,000 cinemas. This is a bad result for a picture starring Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz, Lupita Nyong’o, Diane Kruger, and Fan Bingbing. It’s Kinberg’s second consecutive disaster as director, following 2019’s X-Men flick Dark Phoenix.
The King’s Man, directed by Matthew Vaughn, made roughly $25 million at the American box office after being substantially delayed. This weekend, the picture earned another $3.3 million. Meanwhile, the faith-based sports film American Underdog had a good weekend. With a domestic total of over $20 million, the picture starring Zachary Levi came in fifth with $2.4 million.
