U.S. Open Goers Mistook Laverne Cox for Beyoncé
Several famous people were in attendance as Serena Williams played in the first round of the U.S. Open on Monday night, her possible last professional match. Queen Latifah, Coco Gauff, Offset, Bella Hadid, Bill Clinton, and Anna Wintour were among the celebrities who made an appearance. In spite of the fact that Beyoncé’s presence would not have been out of the question, she was noticeably absent.
A fan, however, did not let it stop her from tweeting her presence. The Twitter handle @Choni posted a video of a Black woman with long hair and a face mask attending the US Open with the caption, “#Beyonce at the #USOpen.”
Fans were quick to proclaim, however, that it was not Queen Bey but rather Emmy-winning actress Laverne Cox. Cox was obviously flattered by the mistake and tweeted her appreciation. The video was even shared again by her.
“Not me getting mistaken for @Beyonce at the #USOpen tonight then trending on Twitter as the internet cackles over the mistaken identity,” she wrote. “These tweets are funny as hell. Enjoy!!!”
Cox has already professed her admiration for the musician. She uploaded a video to social media hours before her match, showing her preparing for the U.S. Open with Bey playing in the background. Cox also made headlines for her incredible Beyoncé impression in Lip Sync Battle.
The tweet’s original poster has since explained his lack of understanding. He later apologised, writing, “My bad.. I was not trying to be funny I promise.” A fan tweets, “I got to excited to see #Beyoncé and though it was her my bad.. it’s @Lavernecox.” Williams emerged victorious in the end, but writer David Dennis Jr. named Cox the night’s second biggest winner.
“Laverne Cox … was mistaken for Beyoncé all night,” he tweeted. “Which is a career highlight for literally anyone.”
