Travis Scott has been effectively removed from Coachella 2022 Lineup Following Astroworld Tragedy
Travis Scott will not be performing at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2022. In November, during his own Astroworld festival, ten people died after a mob rampage during his headlining show, according to KESQ in Palm Springs. After the tragedy, a Change.org petition demanded his removal from Coachella’s roster. Currently, the petition has approximately 60,000 signatures.
The festival notified Scott’s longtime agent, Cara Lewis of the Cara Lewis Group, of its desire to cancel Scott’s appearance and pay a 25% kill charge. Lewis has been adamant about keeping the slot, which would have marked Scott’s comeback to the stage following Astroworld, even proposing to waive the performance cost.
Coachella, founded in 1999, has a 125,000-capacity. Tickets and packages for the 2022 edition are already sold out.
Despite the ambiguity, it’s hard to picture Scott performing at any music festival soon after his Houston show (Live Nation was among the promoters for Astroworld). Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against Scott, Drake, Live Nation, NRG Park, and Score more Holdings in the wake of the Astroworld catastrophe.
Scott expressed regret for the incident, saying in an interview with Charlamagne Tha God earlier this week that he was unaware of the terrible injuries until after his performance. In the wake of the tragedy, he has refunded all Astroworld tickets, volunteered to pay for the victims’ funerals, and canceled subsequent concerts.
Nearly two years ago, Scott was named as a Coachella headlining act alongside Frank Ocean and Rage Against the Machine. In spite of the COVID-19 epidemic, Rage and Scott remained on the festival’s most current list, with Ocean recently delaying his visit until 2023.
Swedish House Mafia confirmed in October that they will be performing at the 2022 event, however, it is uncertain if they will be a headliner. If the festival is allowed to go due to pandemic conditions, it is likely that other musicians, as well as any new headliners, will be revealed then.
Coachella takes place April 15-17 and 22-24 at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, Calif., with Stagecoach taking place the following weekend.
