Tory Lanez fires his lawyer and hired Ex-Attorney of Suge Knight
Tory Lanez apparently changed legal counsel and has a pending court date.
Southern California legal writer Meghann Cuniff, who covered the State of California versus Daystar Peterson (Tory Lanez) trial, released fresh information regarding the Canadian rapper’s legal manoeuvres since he was found guilty on three felony assault counts for the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion.
Tory Lanez is reportedly being defended by Suge Knight’s longtime lawyer, David Kenner, for his January 10 court hearing. George Mgdesyan formerly represented him.
Tory Lanez’s court date is posted on the prison roster, Cuniff tweeted on January 8. “It’s not on Judge Herriford’s calendar, and he’s got a bunch of other stuff at the time. Attorney David Kenner confirmed to me last week he’s now representing Tory.”
“Kenner is a longtime criminal defence attorney whose clients include former Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight.” Cuniff stated, “Anyone with actual experience in criminal law (not all lawyers) will tell you he’s joining the case a bit late: Before trial would have been better.”
Cuniff tweeted that it’s impossible to know what the January 10 court date is about since Los Angeles Superior Court doesn’t make court papers public.
“Penal Code 132 regards false evidence and witness tampering. (132 is also Judge Herriford’s court department number.),” she further said “@LASuperiorCourt actively hides court documents from the public, so it’s really impossible to find out what exactly is going on based on the court record.” She followed up with yet another tweet in the detailed thread, expressing her views about what may be going on while also outlining possible legal motions that may be filed in the case in the future.
Prosecutors wanted to add a bribery allegation to Tory’s trial accusations, but the court rejected it. David Kenner’s post-conviction motion about faulty evidence or witness testimony is unlikely to emerge this quickly.
Tory Lanez, who pleaded not guilty to all charges, was found guilty of all three of them by a grand jury after an eight-day trial, nearly two days of final arguments, and a day of deliberations.
The three charges included carrying a concealed, unregistered firearm and using a firearm negligently.
Tory Lanez’s alleged new lawyer’s previous client Suge Knight who was sentenced to 28 years in jail in October 2018 for the hit-and-run killing of Terry Carter during the 2015 filming of Straight Outta Compton.
