Top Gun: Maverick When and Where to Watch Online
To everyone’s amazement (with the possible exception of star Tom Cruise), Top Gun: Maverick shattered all records at the box office worldwide to become the largest film of the year (so far) and one of the most skillfully executed Hollywood prequels in recent memory. We gave the film five stars in our ecstatic review. Director Joseph Kosinski’s action-packed story of an aging flying ace delighted reviewers and spectators alike and served as a timely reminder that Netflix and Marvel movies aren’t the only things to watch in 2022. It seems sensible that Top Gun fans are anxious to find out when they may watch Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in his much-anticipated comeback from the comfort of their own homes. Although the information on the movie’s upcoming release on streaming sites is still scarce, we’ve compiled all the information we currently have below. Let’s start with what we do know for certain, which is admittedly not much at this point.
Due to the fact that Top Gun: Maverick was just released in theaters on May 27, it is now unavailable for streaming everywhere in the world. It is most likely to continue playing just in theaters until late July at the earliest, at which point its parent company, Paramount, will decide when to distribute it in theaters and on video-on-demand (VOD). However, the post-theatrical release timetable for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the film’s Paramount stablemate, does offer a helpful guide for when we may anticipate experiencing Top Gun: Maverick’s thrills at home.
If Top Gun: Maverick follows the same pattern as Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which became available to buy and rent on demand about three months after its theatrical release, we can anticipate it to appear in the online stores of Apple TV, Prime Video, Google Play, and a few other less popular platforms between August and September. If and when it does, it will probably cost between $7.99 (£4.49) and $19.99 (£13.99) to rent and purchase. In keeping with the fact that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will be released on DVD and Blu-ray at the beginning of August, almost four months after its theatrical debut, Top Gun: Maverick may follow suit and receive a physical release between September and October.
Top Gun: Maverick will be on Paramount Plus?
The exact release date of Top Gun: Maverick on streaming providers is still up in the air. Although it’s likely that Paramount Plus will serve as the film’s only home, it’s not yet known when the still-developing service will begin to stream the film. In keeping with the studio’s other recent productions, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 debuted on Paramount Plus the same day as its VOD release (i.e. three months after its theatrical launch), but Top Gun: Maverick isn’t likely to follow this trend given its phenomenal box office success.
Tom Cruise, the movie’s actor, has the last word as part of his custom movie deal as to when Top Gun: Maverick moves to Paramount Plus. However, sources indicate that Paramount is pressuring him to agree to shorten the movie’s 120-day exclusivity window in an effort to profit from its success (i.e. to drive more subscribers to Paramount Plus). On the other hand, given the outstanding reception to the film, Cruise might advocate for an extension of Top Gun: Maverick’s theatrical release window. Since he really believes in the cinematic experience, it is difficult to imagine him giving his approval to a plan that would transfer his cherished big-screen production to streaming platforms before it is absolutely necessary.
Therefore, we just don’t know when Top Gun: Maverick will be available on Paramount Plus at this time. As previously said, Paramount films have often been released on streaming services 120 days following their theatrical premieres, although Top Gun: Maverick may appear sooner, on schedule, later, or maybe not at all. When we have more information, we’ll let you know. By the way, Paramount Plus is now accessible in more places than ever before. The service, which first debuted in the US last year, just made its debut in the UK. A monthly subscription to the service costs $9.99 / £6.99 (or $4.99 in the US for ad-supported streaming).
