Tinder to introduce ID verification to fight catfishing

Tinder is introducing ID verification for its users all over the world, despite the current debate over how to utilise technology to curb online abuse.

The company stated that it would begin by making the process voluntary, unless required by law, and that it would consider expert opinions as well as which records are most relevant in each country.

Some have proposed that requiring identification to verify a person’s identity before using social media or other online platforms could help combat online abuse by removing anonymity and the abusers’ perceived ability to dodge accountability.

However, critics of the notion have claimed that it may expose online whistleblowers, particularly in authoritarian governments, and limit access to internet services in areas where ID documents are not widely used.

‘We know that in many parts of the world and within traditionally marginalised communities, people might have compelling reasons that they can’t or don’t want to share their real-world identity with an online platform,’ she said.

‘Creating a truly equitable solution for ID verification is a challenging but critical safety project and we are looking to our communities as well as experts to help inform our approach.’

The dating app acknowledged that the issue is “complicated and multifaceted,” but promised to “adapt” its method over time in order to develop a fair, impartial, and privacy-friendly system.

Tinder is the first big platform to commit to a wider implementation of ID verification, but other platforms have been less enthusiastic.

In a recent examination of Twitter’s response to racial abuse directed at England footballers during the Euro 2020 final, the company claimed that ID verification would not have prevented much of the abuse it discovered during the tournament.

According to Twitter’s statistics, 99 percent of the accounts that were suspended for violating abuse rules during the tournament were identifiable and did not post anonymously.

Twitter said it “completely acknowledged” that more effort needed to be done to prevent online abuse, but added that it was a “deep societal issue” that needed to be addressed.

Tinder’s head of trust and safety product, Rory Kozoll, said the app will take a “test-and-learn” approach to implement ID verification technology to ensure it was done correctly.

‘We know one of the most valuable things Tinder can do to make members feel safe is to give them more confidence that their matches are authentic and more control over who they interact with,’ he said.

‘And we hope all our members worldwide will see the benefits of interacting with people who have gone through our ID verification process. We look forward to a day when as many people as possible are verified on Tinder.’
