The Sexual Abuse Trial Of Kevin Spacey Begins
Kevin Spacey appeared in court Thursday, nearly five years after Anthony Rapp accused him of sexual misconduct. Spacey’s lawyer told jurors in opening statements, “He wants justice.” “Once you’ve heard both sides, you’ll be convinced this alleged assault never happened at all.”
The trial, which began this morning with jury selection, is scheduled to last less than two weeks. The Star Trek: Discovery and Rent actor wants compensatory and punitive damages for battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress. A judge dismissed Rapp’s sexual assault lawsuit due to time limits.
Rapp alleges that Spacey made an unwanted sexual approach on him in 1986, when he was 14. Rapp said Spacey “sort of stood in the doorway, kind of swaying. My impression when he came in the room was that he was drunk. ” Oscar winner “picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold. But I don’t, like, squirm away initially, because I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ And then he lays down on top of me,” “Then he laid on me,” Rapp said. T he froze as Spacey tried to “seduce” him before he “squirm” away.
“Are you sure?” According to Rapp’s lawyer Peter Saghir, Spacey remarked during opening arguments. Saghir alleged Spacey pressed his pelvis towards Rapp’s hips to “gratify his sexual desire” Saghir continued, “This was deliberate.” “This is not horseplay.”
After Rapp’s 2017 allegations, Spacey said he did not remember the incident on Twitter. “I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago,” he fiurther said. “But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior.”
Spacey’s defense team alleges Rapp fabricated the allegation to gain attention, sympathy, and fame. Keller told Reuters: “We look forward to a trial by jury with actual evidence rather than trial by social media.”
Spacey has spent months in court. In August, a Los Angeles judge determined that Spacey must pay almost $31 million to House of Cards producers for allegedly sexually assaulting crew members, resulting in his sacking and monetary losses as the program refocused on Robin Wright’s character.
Three months ago, Spacey pleaded not guilty to sexual assault and inflicting penetrative sexual behavior without consent in a London court. His next trial is June 6, 2023.
Both Spacey, 63, and Rapp, 50, will testify in New York.
