The Flash will end with Season 9
The Flash has been canceled by Warner Bros., and its upcoming ninth season will be its final one. The final season of the long-running DC drama will debut in 2023 with a 13-episode run, making it the smallest season length in the program’s history, according to Deadline(opens in a new tab). Since it became known that star Grant Gustin had only agreed to a one-year contract back in January 2022, rumors regarding the program’s future have been rife. It has now been made official that the show will end before the end of 2023.
The Flash, which debuted in 2014, was originally a spin-off of Arrow. It followed Gustin’s Barry Allen, a crime-scene investigator who develops superhuman speed following a laboratory explosion. As the masked superhero known as the Flash, he uses his increased speed to battle crime and look for other metahumans in Central City. Following the launch of The Flash, Warner Bros. and its DC Comics divisions created a number of connected spin-offs that came to be known as the Arrowverse. The animated online series Vixen debuted in 2015, followed by Legends of Tomorrow in 2016 and Supergirl the following year.
A second animated online series, Freedom Fighters: The Ray, and a fifth series, Batwoman, launched in the years that followed. Batwoman debuted in 2019. Black Lightning was likewise written to join the common universe starting with its third season. In addition, since 2014, there has been an annual crossover event including many of the live-action Arrowverse series.
When Arrow itself ended in 2020 after eight seasons, the Arrowverse started to fall apart, and Warner Bros. decided against Green Arrow and the Canaries, a spin-off. Supergirl and Black Lightning both ended in 2021, and Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman were both canceled in April of 2022. The sole remaining program is The Flash, which will have completed nine seasons as opposed to Arrow’s eight by the time it wraps up production and becomes the most popular and longest-running of the Arrowverse shows. 40 seasons and more than 700 episodes on television. The current period has come to an end.
