Telegram is adding a new subscription plan called Telegram Premium
Telegram is launching Telegram Premium, a new subscription package. Telegram Premium rumors have been swirling for weeks, as the business tested an iOS beta. This Monday, Telegram CEO and creator Pavel Durov verified the reports, revealing the new tier on his official channel (here’s an image if you don’t want to join).
Officially, the subscription plan, which will coexist with the free service, will offer new capabilities (such as the ability to share “extra-large documents”) and resources, as well as increase the app’s speed. Premium members will have first access to those new features as well. Durov stresses that none of the free features will be suddenly put behind a paywall and that a new one will be added in the future. Interactivity between Premium and free users will also be improved. Free users, for example, will be able to browse huge files supplied to them by premium members or respond to pinned messages with Premium replies.
Durov’s statement doesn’t reveal much, although there are some potential leaks. The new Premium tier may contain animated avatars, additional conversation management tools, and voice-to-text conversion, according to a Telegram leak channel.
Telegram has already tried numerous financing approaches. Some were maintained and integrated into the app’s Ad Platform, such as Sponsored Messages. Others, like its billion-dollar blockchain platform, TON, were more disastrous. When the SEC became aware of TON, Durov swiftly abandoned the ship and discarded the idea. It’ll be interesting to see if Telegram Premium turns out to be the cash cow the firm hopes for. A Premium tier is more grounded than something like the failed blockchain initiative.
