T-Mobile is facing two lawsuits due to latest data breach

T-Mobile announced earlier this week that it had experienced a serious data breach. Names, Social Security numbers, and dates of birth of around 48 million consumers were among the sensitive data revealed. In recent days, that figure has risen to 53 million.

Consumers who have been affected by the incident include current, previous, and potential customers. This isn’t the first time something like this has occurred. T-Mobile has had five data breaches in the last few years.

Some of the consumers who were impacted by the most recent data breach have now filed lawsuits against the cellphone provider. According to Bloomberg, T-Mobile is being sued for breaking the California Consumer Privacy Act, which gives every Californian the right to examine all of the information a corporation has on them, as well as a complete list of all third parties with whom that data is shared.

T-Mobile is also accused of violating the Washington State Consumer Protection Act due to its poor data security in one of the lawsuits.

The lawsuit Espanoza v. T-Mobile USA Inc. claims that customer identities are at risk because of neglect on the part of T-Mobile. The plaintiffs are also concerned with the monetary costs and the “time spent mitigating the effects of the Data Breach, including time spent dealing with actual or attempted fraud and identity theft.”

Plaintiff Veera Daruwalla, a Kern County, California resident, claims she has already spent hours addressing privacy concerns arising from the hack, including analysing financial and credit accounts for proof of unauthorised activity, in the other case.

The cases are Daruwalla v. T-Mobile USA Inc., W.D. Wash., No. 2:21-cv-1118, complaint 8/19/21 and Espanoza v. T-Mobile USA Inc., W.D. Wash., No. 2:21-cv-1119, complaint 8/19/21.
