Sydney Sweeney Has Been Cast as the Lead in Sony’s ‘Barbarella’ Movie
Sony and Sydney Sweeney are in talks for another potential tentpole. The actor is set to star in a remake of “Barbarella,” as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Sweeney will serve as an executive producer on the untitled project, which is currently in the early stages of production and is looking for a writer and director.
Sweeney’s breakthrough television roles were in Euphoria and The White Lotus, for which she was nominated for an Emmy. In addition to Spider-Man: Homecoming, she has Sony’s Madame Web on her roster, with the feature based on the character set for release in October 2023.

Barbarella was created by Jean-Claude Forest and debuted in a French comic book magazine in 1962. She was a mercenary woman working numerous assignments across the galaxy in the far future. The role was originated by Jane Fonda in a film from 1968, and a musical adaptation premiered in 2004.
There have been multiple attempts over the years to start production on a new film, most recently with director Robert Rodriguez attached to direct a Universal feature picture starring Rose McGowan. Robert Luketic, a film director, attempted to launch a film in 2009.
Sweeney is not only an actor, but also the brains behind the production business Fifty-Fifty Films, which is turning Jessica Goodman’s upcoming 2020 young adult novel They Wish They Were Us into a limited series dubbed The Players Club. She has two agencies representing her: Paradigm and Hansen, Jacobson.
