Star Alabama forward  Darius Miles has been arrested and charged for murder

In connection with the early morning shooting on campus that resulted in the death of a 23-year-old woman, Alabama player Darius Miles and another man have been charged with capital murder.

An spokesperson with the Tuscaloosa County Jail informed ESPN that Miles was booked into the jail about 6:45 p.m. ET Sunday. Miles, a junior reserve forward from Washington, D.C., was no longer a member of the team, according to a statement released by the university on Sunday.

The incident happened early on Sunday morning, according to Tuscaloosa police Capt. Jack Kennedy, on the Strip off University Boulevard close to campus. Jamea Harris, a resident of the Birmingham region, reportedly died after being shot.

A capital murder accusation was brought against Miles, 21, and Michael Lynn Davis, 20, both of Charles County, Maryland. A capital murder charge was filed because shots were fired into a moving car, Kennedy explained.

“At this time, it appears that the only motive was a minor altercation that these individuals had with the victim as they were out on The Strip,”  Kennedy said in a press conference on Sunday night. He said there was no history between them.

He said that at at 1:45 a.m., the driver of another car, in which Harris was a passenger, contacted campus police near Bryant-Denny Stadium, alleging that someone had shot into the vehicle and he had fired back. Kennedy did not say who had shot the pistol or who was injured, but did say that one of the suspects had been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life threatening wounds.

Kennedy said it seemed unlikely that either the other motorist or Harris and Davis were students at the institution.

Alabama confirmed that Miles will be out for the remainder of the season with an ankle injury before Saturday’s game versus LSU. The institution has taken down his bio and issued a statement saying he “has been removed off campus.”

The statement added, “The University of Alabama’s utmost priority is the safety and well-being of the campus community, We are grieved by the incident that occurred near campus last night and extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends.”

While being led away in a police car, an emotional Miles can be heard crying, “I swear… I love you more than you imagine” in a video released by AL.com.

So far this season, Miles has played in six games. The fourth-ranked Crimson Tide beat Jackson State 84-64 the last time he played on December 20, 2022, when he scored two points.
