Some Indiana American Water customers in West Lafayette have been advised to boil
Employees from Indiana American Water are working this morning between Indiana 43 and River Road in West Lafayette to fix a break in a 20-inch transmission main, according to a news release from the company.
More than 9,600 customers in the high-pressure zone on West Lafayette’s north side had low water pressure as a result of the break (see maps).
A precautionary boil water advisory has been issued for all customers in the high-pressure zone, which includes about 80% of the company’s customers in West Lafayette, due to the break, which caused water pressure in areas of the system to dip below 20 psi. Through the company’s CodeRED emergency emergency notification, customers in the area have been advised of the break and boil advisory by phone, e-mail, and text.
Customers should only drink and cook with tap water after boiling it for three minutes, according to the announcement. Washing and bathing can be done with tap water.
Water pressures in the system will continue to drop throughout the morning as repairs are completed due to the position of the water main break in relation to the company’s Davis Ferry water treatment facility. Repairs should be completed by mid-afternoon, and water pressures in the area should begin to return to normal by late afternoon today, according to Indiana American Water.
In the case that water pressure dips below 20 pounds per square inch (psi) in any area of a distribution system, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) requires precautionary boil advisories to assure high-quality water.
In its West Lafayette service region, Indiana American Water serves roughly 13,000 customers, or more over 35,000 people.
