In the most recent instance of a massive social media outage, Snapchat users reported widespread outages Wednesday morning, nine days after Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp went dark for six hours.
Snapchat users experienced issues accessing the app on Wednesday, in what looked to be a worldwide outage.
According to the uptime-monitoring site DownDetector, user reports of difficulties with Snapchat began to rise at 7:15 a.m. ET. Many Snapchat users reported that they were unable to send messages or publish Stories.
“We’re aware that some Snapchatters are having issues using the app right now — hang tight, we’re looking into it!” the company’s help account on Twitter said in a statement on Wednesday.
In a separate instance, Facebook’s family of applications, which includes Instagram and WhatsApp, went down for more than six hours last week, making it one of the company’s longest outages in recent years.
Snapchat, like practically every other internet service, has experienced technical difficulties that have rendered its service unavailable. According to Google, Snap was down for around six hours in April 2020 due to an outage of a component in the Google Cloud Platform, which also impacted access to Gmail and Nest.
Snapchat has been on a roll recently, with an average of 293 million daily active users as of the second quarter of 2021, up 13 million from the previous quarter and marking the company’s best user growth rate in four years. Snap predicted that its global user base will reach 301 million DAUs in the third quarter, up 21% year over year.
Snapchat is the principal means of communication for some Snapchat users. Disgruntled Snapchat users took to Twitter to vent their frustrations and share memes about the outage.
