RTX 4070 & RTX 4080 could launch in 2022
The RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 weren’t expected to debut until 2023, but Moore’s Law is Dead suggests we could see a “paper launch” as early as November 2022. Nvidia has had a rough few months leading up to the release of the Lovelace graphics cards. From reports from AIBs about oversupply issues on existing cards to steep price cuts on the current performance king, the RTX 3090 Ti, it’s clear that the green giant is getting ready for the launch. The launch of the RTX 4090 has been confirmed for October, leaving the future of the RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 in doubt.
Moore’s Law is Dead reports that Nvidia’s recent aggressive price cuts may have won over AIB partners, paving the way for the RTX 4080 and 4070 to debut in November 2022. But there could be a major caveat to this. It’s possible that instead of a “normal” launch, Nvidia has the highly-anticipated GPUs scheduled for a “paper” launch. This may be the result of a combination of worries about AMD, their main competitor, and a desire to clear out inventory of older Ampere cards.
Let’s say Nvidia releases the RTX 4080 and 4070, but there isn’t enough demand to meet the supply. To encourage customers to stock up on older cards, NVIDIA could also offer steep discounts on the RTX 3090 Ti and RTX 3080 chips. Until 2023, when Nvidia expects the current stock of Amped cards to run out, the availability of the RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 may be constrained.
Furthermore, sources of Moore’s Law is Dead said that existing graphics cards could see further discounts over the coming weeks if they are sitting on too many RTX 3090 Ti, RTX 3090, RTX 3080 Ti, and RTX 3080 cards. Industry insiders like Kopite7Kimi have said that the specifications for the RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 are still being tweaked, but that Lovelace will launch in October with the RTX 4090.
