There are monsters called Death Mist Spewers responsible for the red mist. You won’t be able to kill these animals with a gun because they’re immovable and only exist within the mist itself.

Redfall: How to Clear Red Mist
Remove the Death Mist Spewer from the red mist in Redfall by shining your portable UV beam on it. If you hit LT, the UV Beam will concentrate into a concentrated beam that will quickly dispatch the spewer.
The Death Mist Spewer will send out a final scream after around five seconds, at which point the surrounding crimson mist will fade away. You need to approach it now, and either melee it or shoot it to destruction. The greatest strategy here, in our opinion, is to use melee instead of firearms.
Death Mist Spewers can respawn anywhere, so you may have to deal with them more than once. But hey, at least you learned how to get through that obstacle.
