    Police say fatalities are ‘likely’ after a severe tornado slammed Mayfield, KY

    Tornadoes hit Western Kentucky on Friday night, prompting Governor Andy Beshear to announce a state of emergency. A tornado hit Mayfield, Kentucky, causing enormous damage and damaging structures.

    The Kentucky National Guard and Kentucky State Police have been called in to assist.

    KSP Post 1 Mayfield is responding to a severe tornado event that spreads across multiple counties in Western Ky. Significant damage is reported. While no fatalities have been confirmed at this time, loss of life is expected. Multiple agencies are responding. Updates to follow.

    The Graves County Emergency Management Office has opened a shelter at Mayfield High School, WPSD reports. Those who can safely walk can go to Fire Station 1, 211 E. Broadway Street.

    However, the Kentucky State Police said further deaths are “expected.”

    West Kentucky Rural Electric warns power outages might be ‘lengthy’ due to downed transmission lines and widespread damage. They also say mobile towers are damaged and phone lines are backed up.
