Pete Davidson parallels Kanye West’s actions to Will Smith’s Oscar slap
In his first stand-up comedy act in three years, Pete Davidson took a swipe at his girlfriend Kim Kardashian’s ex, Kanye West.
Davidson opened the Netflix Is a Joke comedy festival with a set at the Hollywood Bowl that included jokes about the rapper, his relationship with Kim Kardashian, and Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards, reports Entertainment Tonight.
“Donda” music videos and social media posts have often referenced Kardashian’s divorce from Kanye West since davidson began dating her during her tumultuous split from West.
Netflix Is a Joke host James Davidson allegedly likened Smith’s Oscars slap to Kanye West’s music video for “Eazy” during his stand-up set. The “before time,” as Davidson described the December basketball game he attended with Rock, was when they had no idea what was about to happen. West kidnaps and decapitates claymation version of Davidson in the “Eazy” video.
The comedian also made a jab at West, who has legally changed his name to Ye, for supposedly informing people that Davidson had AIDS. West has denied this claim. Since “Ye is a genius,” Davidson stated he nearly believed Ye’s reported statements.
Ye collaborated on “Louie Bags,” and at one point, while Davidson gave his pal Jack Harlow a free pass for doing so, the comedian made light of Bill Burr’s “King of Staten Island” co-star attending one of the rapper’s “Sunday Service” gigs.
A few minutes after Davidson’s set, headliner Chris Chappelle appeared and addressed the controversy over his Netflix special “The Closer,” which featured transphobic material. There were no specifics of his set allowed to be published, and spectators had to put their phones and recording devices in secured pouches, according to NBC News.
The next night, Davidson was the star of his own performance at Hollywood’s Fonda Theatre as part of the Netflix Comedy Festival. Among the performers were Carly Aquilino, Giulio Gallarotti, Joey Gay, Jordan Rock, Dave Sirus, Big Wet, Neko White, and Machine Gun Kelly during that show. Davidson and Kardashian were spotted leaving the Fonda Theatre together. Trevor Noah’s White House correspondents dinner was held on Saturday night, and the President and First Lady were in attendance.
