Nvidia announced that it would be ‘unlaunching’ the 12GB RTX 4080
It appears that the firm has finally given in to the metaphorical pressure and made an unexpected decision as a result of the criticism that has surrounded the newly unveiled version of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 with 12 GB of memory. The 12GB RTX 4080 was “unlaunched” by Nvidia after the company made an announcement about it. The explanation is given in the official post for the decision to ‘unlaunch’ the product is that “the RTX 4080 12GB is an excellent graphics card, but it’s not titled appropriately.” It is unclear what the purpose of having two GPUs with the designation 4080 is.
Despite this, the statement stated that the 16GB version of the graphics card is “great and on pace to surprise gamers everywhere.” The release date for this version of the graphics card is still set for November 16th. There was a lot of discussion around the 12GB RTX 4080 and its specifications, particularly in light of the high starting price tag of $899. We observed that the graphics cards employed two different chips when we compared the 12GB version to the 16GB version. The 16GB version includes the AD103 GPU chip, while the 12GB version uses the AD104 chip.
In addition to this, the 4080 has 2,048 fewer CUDA cores, a smaller amount of cache memory, and narrower bus width. Even though we do not yet have the card in our possession to test it, this is very likely to result in a performance difference of 20% to 25% between the 12GB and 16GB variants. This is a significant departure from other models with the same branding as the 4080. Also, benchmarks from Overclock3D have been stolen, which backs up the idea that there is a difference in performance.
Because of this, many people were under the impression that the 12GB 4080 was actually a 4070 in disguise, with a significantly higher price point. According to the mediocre performance and the fact that Nvidia postponed its introduction in anticipation of a rebranding, there is a lot of credit to be given to that idea. One can only hope that a mistake of this scale won’t be repeated any time soon.
